Hombe forest is located in the larger Mt. Kenya Water Tower, an important ecosystem to predominantly upstream agricultural communities and pastoralists downstream. It is also a n important habitat for elephants, primates and birds. In response to continued threat from deforestation, the permanent secretary in the Ministry of Environment and Forestry Hearts of Green and Hombe Community Forest Association (CFA), made a reconnaissance surveys to lay ground reforestation initiatives.

This was a collaboration effort between Hearts of Green, the Kenya Forest Service and the Ministry of Environment and Foestry and Launched on Tuesday, November 17, 2020, the Daily Tree Planting Challenge. sought to call on each person, regardless of where they are, plant at least one tree daily, take a photo and share it on their social media platforms, using the hashtag #DailyTreePlantingChallenge. The initiative saw thousands of Kenyans heed to the call and planted trees in different areas of Kenya

Mau Forest is the largest indigenous montane forest in East Africa, covering an area of 273,300 or 675,000 acres. It is an important ecosystem owing to its ecological and social economic development, however over the years this critical ecosystem has faced serious challenges including encroachment by farmers, deforestation and grabbing. The hotly contested, though politicized issue involving Kenya’s biggest Water Tower was Hearts of Green’s next challenge where we joined various stakeholders in ‘Save the Mau’ campaign that aimed at restoring degraded sites.

With the tallest geographical element in Kenya, Mount Kenya, plainly in sight, Hearts of Green toured Meru County for the first time ever to conduct a tree planting event at Ontulili Dispensary, Meru county. The chief guests for the event were the Principal Secretary, Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Ms. Betty C. Maina; the Deputy County Commissioner, Buuri sub-County; and the County’s County Executive for Environment, Wildlife & Natural Resources, Ms. Edith Caroline Kagwiria Mutigathe, as a representative of the County’s Governor, Hon. Kiraitu Murungi. The event was held on 15 November 2019.

Kenya Water Towers Agency; Mt. Kenya Foundation

This event was organized by the Hearts of Green Organization and Friends of Ondiri Wetland where a total of 1,200 bamboo saplings and 1,000 indigenous tree seedlings were planted. This wetland is an important habitat for birds and other wildlife and also provides livelihood to the local community. During the event, Kenya Water Towers Agency‘s Director Mr. Mumo urged residents of Kikuyu sub-County, Kiambu County to take lead in conserving wetlands and water towers.

Munyuini School Alumni

Munyu-ini Primary School is located in Gatundu sub-County in Kiambu County, right at the foot of the Aberdare Ranges, one of the five critical Water Towers of Kenya In collaboration with the school environmental alumini, Hearts of Green. Participated in the held a prize-giving event for the best performing students in the school which culminated in to a tree planting activity to mark the event

Storm Water Management Forum; Laikipia County Government; Nanyuki’s Kazi Mtaani Members; Kenya Water Towers Agency; Mt. Kenya Foundation, British Army Training Unit Kenya (BATUK); Office of The Deputy County Commissioner Nanyuki

This project was as a result of a call to support the County Government of Laikipia in its efforts to rehabilitate 9.8km of Nanyuki. River. 5,000 tree seedlings were donated and planted with local communities On October 23, 2020

Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KERRA)

This partnership between Hearts of Green and Kenya Rural Roads Authority is an appreciation of the Transport sector in conservation of the environment. Pollution from transportation industry account for 23% of global air pollution. This initiative aimed at engaging stakeholders in the transport sector to mitigate GHGs.

Kenya Forest Service, Nyeri County Government and Kenya Water Towers Agency

On Friday, October 11, 2019, Hearts of Green, in partnership with Kenya Forest Service, Nyeri County Government and Kenya Water Towers Agency, held the Adopt A Tree Program’s Nyeri County Edition that engaged community members in a tree planting event

Nakuru County boasts of rich agricultural and tourism potential owing to its strategy location in the rift valley and ideal climatic conditions that support millions of people and wildlife. With an aim to enhance this opportunity, the County Government and Hearts of Green organized for a tree planting challenge dubbed “tree Planting Marathon”. This event was held on July 31, 2019 in Subukia Sub County, where over 10,000 trees were planted in about 13 schools.

Tafaria Castle and Country Lodge

At the invitation of Dr. Kangure, an alumni of the school, Hearts of Green visited Wiyumiririe Primary School in Laikipia County on May 25 2019. The school. Is located in an ASAL area where climate change impact is evident for a tree planting drive . The event aimed at sensitizing the children on the impact of climate change and how to mitigate through local action.

This event was organized to officially launch of the Hearts of Green‘s “Adopt A Tree” program. The Deputy County Commissioner, Kiambu County, Mr. Charles Muriithi was the chief guest of this monumental event.

Juja Sub county

On July 12 2019, Hearts of Green embarked on one of their goals, which to some seemed impossible. It was the launch of a tree planting marathon, where only one class lesson would be interrupted. The 35-minute tree planting marathon was held within Juja sub-County in Kiambu County where trees were planted in all the 44 public primary schools in the sub-County.

Participation in National Regional and International Climate Change Advocacy Forums

Working with communities at the grassroot level, Hearts of Green understand how these vulnerable communities are impacted by climate change. In this regard, we have used our voice actively in Climate change advocacy at the national, regional and global level.

Africa climate summit 2023

The Africa Climate Week (ACW) is an annual event that brings together leaders from governments, businesses, international organizations and civil society to explore ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while adapting to the mounting fallout from the climate crisis. During the 2023 event in Nairobi, Hearts of Green was represented by a strong delegation. The theme of the event was “Accelerating access to abundant affordable clean energy in Africa”

The 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference (CoP28)

The 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference or Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC, more commonly known as COP28, was the 28th United Nations Climate Change conference, held from 30 November to 13 December at Expo City, Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Hearts of Green joined other CSOs in raising their voice on finance for loss and damage.
