Adopt a Site: SEKU Rehabilitation Drive
In partnership with the South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU) and the Wangari Maathai Institute, Hearts of Green launched a bold landscape rehabilitation effort along a 9-kilometer stretch of land in Kitui County.
Through the “Adopt a Site” model, SEKU and its collaborators are transforming a once-degraded area into a vibrant green corridor, with a focus on planting indigenous and fruit trees to restore biodiversity, improve soil health, and benefit surrounding communities.
A key feature of this initiative is the long-term vision: each planted seedling is part of a broader commitment to sustainable care. With the help of local communities and student volunteers, seedlings are supported using innovative watering systems—including 20-litre water bottles to ensure survival during dry seasons.
The SEKU project represents the very essence of LANSRET: restoring land, empowering communities, and building ecological resilience—one grove at a time.
