Wangari Maathai Legacy: Landscape Repair and Transformation

Landscape Repair and Transformation

The Wangari Maathai Legacy is an initiative by the Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Studies and the Hearts of Green Organization to promote tree growing and landscape restoration in line with Kenya’s ambitious goal of planting 15 billion trees by 2032.

This initiative addresses the global landscape degradation crisis, with over 50% of landmass needing repair, as highlighted in the Bonn Challenge (2011). Kenya has committed to restoring 5.1 million hectares of land by 2030 under the AFR100 Initiative and the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030).

Recognizing a gap in expertise, this initiative supports individuals, corporates, and stakeholders by offering:

Planning and logistics for tree-growing projects

Site identification and seedling sourcing

Coordination of planting and monitoring growth

Youth engagement across schools, colleges, and universities

Why Grow Trees

Environmental Conservation

Reduce carbon footprints, conserve forests, and restore ecosystems.

Corporate Responsibility

Build a green image, promote sustainable products, and support biodiversity.

Global Impact

Contribute to SDGs, climate agreements, and circular economy practices.

Core Values of the Wangari Maathai Legacy:

  • Tree Growing: Beyond planting, focus on nurturing trees to maturity.
  • Good Governance: Promote transparency and sustainability.
  • Peace Promotion: Foster harmony through environmental restoration.

Join the movement to transform Kenya’s landscapes and honor Wangari Maathai’s vision of a sustainable, peaceful, and greener future.
