About The Programme

“Wangari Maathai Legacy”

This is an initiative by Hearts of Green and Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Studies aimed at engaging individuals, corporates and other stakeholders in tree growing.

The Government of Kenya set an ambitious target of planting 15 billion trees across the country by year 2032. This was in response to adverse effects of climate change and also a response to realization by global community that over 50% of the global landmass is degraded and need to be repaired as a noted in a global stakeholders meeting in Bonn 2011, which popularly known as Bonn challenge 2011. Based on this Kenya identified and committed to restore 5.1 million hectares, nearly 9 percent of its total landmass by 2030 under the African Forest Landscape Restoration Initiative (AFR100)  The United Nations General Assembly declared 2021-2030 as the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration. The PARIS agreement and subsequent COPs have indicated the need for renewed commitment by stakeholders to restore the landscapes and aquatics aquatics capes using a different approach.

Based on this there has been a clarion call by the government for corporates and individuals to direct their corporate social responsibility activities towards tree growing and landscape regeneration to boost the campaign. In line with this clarion call, there is a realization that while majority of the corporates and individuals are willing to join hands in the tree growing, landscapes and aquatics capes restoration, they have limited expertise on these activities. In this regard, the two organization, that is the Hearts of Green Organization and Wangari Maathai Institute of Peace and Environmental Studies is offering to support these organizations in bridging this knowledge gap.
