This year’s Mazingira Day, celebrated on 10th October 2025, marked a major milestone in Kenya’s ongoing efforts to restore its landscapes and fight climate change. Under the Landscape Repair and Transformation (LANSRET) Programme, partners came together to launch the Platinum Forest at the Directorate of Veterinary Services (DVS), Kabete — a flagship site symbolizing collaborative climate action.

The initiative brought together Platinum Credit Kenya, Hearts of Green Organization, the Wangari Maathai Institute, the Kenya Forest Service, and the Directorate of Veterinary Services, under the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development.

“Our target is 50 million trees. Partnerships like this will help us reach it,” said Meshack Omwega, representing the Directorate of Veterinary Services.

Elizabeth Kyalo, Managing Director of Platinum Credit, emphasized that “The success of a tree is not that it is planted, but that it grows and benefits the environment.”

Prof. Thuita Thenya, Director of the Wangari Maathai Institute, added,
“Today, as we mark 20 years since Wangari Maathai won the Nobel Peace Prize, we are reminded to continue caring for the Earth.”

Fred from KWS noted, “It is encouraging to see all sectors come together for the 15 billion tree goal.”

Moses Muya, Executive Director of Hearts of Green, shared, “Under #LANSRET, we ensure every tree planted survives and helps restore our landscapes.”

This event underscored Kenya’s unified approach to sustainable development, aligning efforts in climate resilience, biodiversity conservation, social welfare, and sustainable livelihoods.

Planting Hope under LANSRET at Kenyatta University Teaching, Research and Referral Hospital.

Earlier on 4th October 2025, ahead of Mazingira Day, the University of Nairobi’s Wangari Maathai Institute, in partnership with Hearts of Green and Kanisa SACCO, planted over 400 trees at the Kenyatta University Teaching, Research and Referral Hospital.

The event — part of the ongoing LANSRET Initiative — strengthened collaborations across academia, corporate partners, and community groups in driving meaningful landscape restoration.

“Planting trees is one way we continue the legacy of Wangari Maathai. We are not planting for ourselves but for the community, ensuring future generations benefit,” said Prof. Thuita Thenya.

Ms. Ann Kioi, Chair of Kanisa SACCO, affirmed:
“This is not a one-off partnership. We’ve worked with the Wangari Maathai Institute and Hearts of Green for three years now, and each time our efforts grow stronger.”

Dr. Joseph Kurauka from Kenyatta University noted,
“Tree cover remains a challenge, but with the rains, survival rates will be high. We’re promoting indigenous species and ensuring 30% are fruit trees to support both ecology and livelihoods.”

Mr. Moses Muya, Executive Director of Hearts of Green, emphasized,
“We are not just planting trees; we are changing landscapes. Through LANSRET, we are transforming degraded areas into green, thriving spaces.”

Tree-Growing Across Kenya’s Counties

In addition to these flagship events, Hearts of Green coordinated tree-growing activities across ten counties under the LANSRET Program, marking a powerful, nationwide celebration of Mazingira Day.

🌿 Counties reached:

  • Nyandarua
  • Uasin Gishu
  • Baringo
  • Nyeri
  • Busia
  • Kakamega
  • Nakuru
  • Bungoma
  • Laikipia
  • Nairobi

Through these county-level school-based projects — supported by the Kenya Forest Service, Platinum Credit Ltd, and the Wangari Maathai Institute — learners, teachers, and local communities took part in restoring Kenya’s landscapes while nurturing the next generation of environmental stewards.

Across Kenya, the Mazingira Day Celebrations were marked under the Landscape Repair and Transformation (LANSRET) Program in 10 counties, where over 10,000 trees were planted. Each site will receive continuous follow-up and care to ensure a 100% survival rate, reinforcing the program’s commitment to long-term landscape restoration and climate resilience.

Together, we’re not just planting — we’re transforming landscapes, nurturing ecosystems, and carrying forward the vision of Prof. Wangari Maathai for a greener, more sustainable Kenya.
