Inkiito Greening Initiative

Growing Trees. Growing Futures.

The Inkiito Greening Initiative is a landscape restoration and environmental stewardship programme at Inkiito Primary School in Kajiado, implemented by Hearts of Green Organisation in partnership with the Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Studies, with support from Viva 365 Insurance Brokers.

Located in a semi-arid landscape, Inkiito faces challenges including prolonged dry periods, limited water availability and pressure on vegetation and biodiversity. The initiative seeks to respond to these challenges by creating a greener, more resilient school environment while engaging the community in restoration.

Growing More Than Trees

The initiative combines indigenous and fruit trees, creating environmental and practical benefits for the school and surrounding community.

But the focus goes beyond planting. Through the Adopt-a-Tree approach, students are encouraged to take responsibility for trees, learning that restoration requires care, commitment and continued stewardship.

Restoration Beyond Planting Day

Inkiito has shown that successful restoration depends on what happens after the planting event.

Watering, protection, appropriate species selection, monitoring and community involvement all play an important role in helping trees establish and thrive. The initiative therefore promotes a longer-term approach to landscape restoration rather than treating tree planting as a one-day activity.

A Partnership for Impact

The initiative brings together Viva 365 Insurance Brokers, Hearts of Green, the Wangari Maathai Institute, Inkiito Primary School and the local community around a shared goal: creating healthier and more resilient landscapes.

It demonstrates how corporate support can translate into practical environmental action, while giving schools and communities an active role in caring for the landscapes around them.

Our Vision

We envision Inkiito as a model for school-based landscape restoration, where trees support biodiversity, food security, environmental education and climate resilience, and where young people grow up seeing themselves as custodians of their environment.
